Last night, West Haven Public Schools held its annual Unsung Hero Award Dinner, bringing the community together to recognize individuals who make a difference each day. From teachers to front office staff to security guards and many more roles, our district is supported by people who care deeply about their work and the students they serve.
Those honored have gone above and beyond in their roles. Their efforts often take place behind the scenes, but they play an important part in keeping our schools running smoothly. While it is always a team effort, this night was set aside to recognize their contributions.
Thank you for the work you put in every day. It was an honor to celebrate you all. 👏🎉

Mackrille students in grades K-4 took part in the annual courtyard garden replanting with Assistant Superintendent and former Mackrille principal Judy Drenzek. Students learned about the value of gardening and sustainability while getting hands-on experience planting seeds for pumpkins, beans, cucumbers, tomatoes, sunflowers, basil, and more. The garden will continue to grow over the summer, helping bring farm-to-table learning opportunities for students in the upcoming school year 🌱🌎🌿

In celebration of National Poetry Month, West Haven Public Schools students were recognized last night at the Land Trust of West Haven “Poet-Tree” Celebration, with winners from Pagels, Seth Haley, Washington, Forest, Mackrille, Carrigan, Bailey, and WHHS. Poems will be displayed along the boardwalk near the bocce courts in the coming weeks. We are incredibly proud of our students 🌿📜

Today, Mackrille Elementary and Washington Elementary Schools hosted Mayor Borer and Summer Weidman from the CT Agricultural Experiment Station for an engaging discussion on protecting Connecticut’s lakes and ponds. Students explored the wildlife that depends on these ecosystems and learned about invasive plant species and efforts to control their spread. The visit concluded with students receiving Earth Day themed word searches and seeds to take part in upcoming celebrations. Thank you to both guests for sharing their time and knowledge 🌎🌿✨

To close out Read Across America Week 2026, our elementary schools welcomed some special visitors over the past two days. Forest Elementary was visited by the University of New Haven Football Team 🏈 and the Dance and Cheerleading teams from Southern Connecticut State University along with their mascot Otus the Owl 🦉. Mackrille Elementary also welcomed many guests including Mayor Dorinda Borer, Judge Cirello ⚖️, Superintendent Neil Cavallaro, and several other community members. We hope everyone enjoyed celebrating the joy of reading this week. 📣📚
