WEST HAVEN,
Aug. 8, 2016 —All West Haven families are invited to celebrate the start of a new school year with the Westies on Wheels bus, which will be visiting four West Haven neighborhoods on Thursday, Aug. 18 (please note this new date; it was originally scheduled for Aug. 15) and handing out free school supplies.

The WoW bus will begin the day with a stop at Meadow Landing at 397 Meadowbrook Court from 9-10:30 a.m., and then move onto Spring Heights at 55 Glade St. from 11 a.m.-12:30 p.m. It will be stationed at St. Paul Church, 41 Alling St., from 1-2:30 p.m., and then end the day at the Savin Rock Conference Center, 6 Rock St., from 3-4:30 p.m.

Youngsters and their parents or guardians can come to one of the bus’ stops to receive pencils, folders, rulers, backpacks and other back-to-school essentials, as well as carbon monoxide detectors, hygiene items and bicycle helmets. Each bus stop will have an equal amount of available supplies. All of the items were donated this summer by area residents and businesses and will help to ensure West Haven students have everything they need to start classes on the first day of school on August 29.

School staff members who are volunteering with WoW will be on hand to answer questions and distribute information on new student registration, special education, school and community resources and supports, and other school district programs. There will also be face-painting and games.

This is the second year in a row for the WoW outreach effort, which began last year as a way for West Haven students, especially those in need, to get ready for school, and for school staff to make a direct connection with school families.

“We’re excited to get out into neighborhoods across town to kick off the new school year with West Haven families, whether their kids are new to our district or have been with us for a while,” said West Haven High School Assistant Principal Dana Paredes, who has organized WoW for the past two years with WHHS teachers Melanie Deninger and Lauren Kozlowski.

“We have tons of backpacks and school supplies students can use to start the new year off right, thanks to the very generous people living and working in West Haven and surrounding towns. We couldn’t do this without the community, and we want to thank everyone who helped make Westies on Wheels possible for the second year in a row.”

Organizers hope the event and new school supplies will get students excited and feeling confident for their first day of school. For some youngsters, it can make all the difference, Paredes added.

Families are reminded that they may come to any of the stops, no matter which part of town they live in, but are asked to only visit one stop. Additionally, children must be present to receive a backpack.
