WEST HAVEN, Feb. 22, 2016 — The West Haven Public School District is beginning the kindergarten registration process and encouraging parents and guardians to call for a registration appointment.

Kindergarten registration will take place March 29-31 at Molloy School, 255 Meloy Road, for children who will start kindergarten in the fall. The youngsters must turn 5 years old on or before January 1, 2017.

Parents and guardians should call the Board of Education at 203-937-4300 ext. 7118 as soon as possible to schedule a kindergarten registration appointment. Morning, afternoon and early evening times are available. The future kindergartner must attend the appointment with his or her parent or guardian.

Spanish-speaking families may call 203-479-1495 to book a timeslot. Additionally, translators for multiple languages will be available at Molloy School during kindergarten registration week to assist families.

After booking a registration appointment, families must fill out the online registration form found at whschools.org. The online form should be completed before the appointment. Families should also print out a copy of the finished form and bring that to the appointment.

Anyone who needs help in completing the form or does not have a printer should arrive at Molloy School a half-hour before the scheduled kindergarten registration appointment; computers and assistance will be available. Computers are also available at the public library.

When attending their appointment, families must bring a copy of their child’s most recent physical and immunization records; two proofs of residency, such as a copy of a lease, mortgage statement, and most recent utility, phone or cable bill; and their child’s birth certificate (the birth certificate must be the large size; wallet-size versions are not accepted).

A child can still be registered even if his or her physical examination has not yet been completed. However, the exam will need to be done before school starts in the fall, or the student will not be allowed to begin classes.

Registration appointments will include a skills assessment for the future kindergartner and hearing and vision screenings. Representatives from the Community House and Family Resource Center will be at the conference center to speak with parents about their services and other community resources.

Each registered youngster will receive a free backpack of items to help prepare for school, such as flashcards and a book, while parents will receive information on what they can work on with their child over the summer to reinforce skills that will be needed in kindergarten.

Families are also reminded that kindergarten classes at all six district elementary schools are full-day programs.

Parents and guardians may download the free school district app for their cell phone to receive reminders about registration, orientation at school, applying for the free/reduced lunch price program, and the start of school. Search “West Haven Public Schools” in your phone’s app store to download the app, agree to accept its “push notifications” or alerts, and then select “Kindergarten Registration” in the app’s options.
